With the lack of suitable bike racks for E-MTB’s I decided to purchase the Torpedo7 and modify it to suit E-bikes. With some scrap 50x50 RHS that I had laying around I made a frame to slide into the tow ball hitch an afternoons work and with a few wee mod’s I now have a bike rack capable of holding 100kg’s and carrying 4 E-bike’s with ease.

On the plus side this bike rack works well, and is great for carrying bikes of different sizes and frame configurations. The support struts fold down making it easy to access the rear hatch of the car without removing the rack completely. Note that is does require a 50mm towball (not a 1-7/8" which is more common in NZ). It would have been helpful if the coupling could handle both sizes. On the negative side the quality of the fixings is poor. On assembly one of the bolt heads punched through the cheap plastic washer, one of the bolts securing the tailgate sheared on the first trip, and there are signs of rust already on some of the washers. A shame as the rack is basically well-designed, and for another few dollars for better quality components would have earned a five-star rating. So if you're looking for a good rack on a budget and are handy with your own tools and fixings then this rack is fine. Or you can pay four times the price and get a Thule with better quality components. Your call!

The good: you can load the rack on to your tow bar and still open the boot with out the bikes on. Can transport 4 bikes without rack rash or them rubbing and crashing around on the back. Can secure different size bikes and all shape of frames easily. The Bad: not exactly small to store when not in use. If you have two different sized bikes side by side can be a bit of trick to get the vertical loop in the right position for both. Takes a bit of assembling if you are in hurry. Light bar a bit flimsy, time will tell if this handles the jandal Improvements: Trailer lights wiring should have more ties. I think with 4 bikes on it could do with a hatch strap to the back to help with a bit of flex. No 100% on the 50mm ball thing, I have run this on the standard ball and a number of mates have too. Guessing if she lets go it will be one big insurance claim! Only thing better than this maybe a vertical rack but they are serious churrrrching.
