Kids in the 21st century are just the same as previous generations, they make noise, have too much energy and are just a messy, but they are different in that they are the first to be ‘digital natives’. This phrase was originally coined in the 1990s but means a person born or brought up during the age of digital technology and so familiar with computers and the Internet from an early age.
Being computer literate from an early age isn’t a bad thing, in fact it is an important skill, however, a big part of being a kid is about playing in the real world not just the digital one.
We ran our own poll and asked parents what they thought their kids were missing out on; we got a variety of answers from building huts in the bush, playing go home stay home, learning to ride a bike and even making mud pies.
So this school holidays why don’t you try a screen-free day, unplug the family for 24 hours and spending that time getting outside, going on a bushwalk ,teaching your child to ride a bike, donning a wetsuit and getting back on your bodyboards, create memories that childhood is made of.
See You Out There
